WAYNE DAVIS CONCRETE CASE STUDY the first few installations, representatives from Command Alkon came on site and showed Wayne Davis how simple it is to secure the hardware and get the system up and running. After a little bit of training, Wayne Davis' shop was able to take over and perform the installations themselves. With installation time being about three hours, two to three employees were able to install four to five trucks per day until the full fleet was armed with the system. Maintenance for the hardware is minimal, but should a part need to be replaced, it is an easy and transient process. Anytime a new process is implemented, there will always be people who want to challenge it, which is what Wayne Davis noticed with some of their seasoned drivers. These drivers have been in the industry for many years and know a great deal about ready mix concrete. However, even those who questioned the effectiveness of the probe realized that the technology is extremely accurate and simplifies their day-to-day operations. Now, drivers have immediate visibility into when the load is fully mixed, so they can stay in the cab of the truck and do not have to risk injury climbing up and down to eyeball the product. It also reduces the time that is spent on the jobsite making adjustments, as well as when returning to the plant with returned concrete that can be used for another job. The ability to know the materials properties helps Wayne Davis determine if the returned load can be used for a different job. If so, the driver can save the 20 minutes that they would have spent dumping washout water and get back on the road. On a residential project, Wayne Davis uses Load Assurance by tracking the truck to the job to make sure they pour efficiently and monitor the water added. The data collected by the system can be used later once the job is done to dispute any claims. They can also monitor the slump to determine if specifications need to be made to the loads being produced for the same job; that way, materials arrive in perfect condition to begin pouring. On a larger commercial pour, Wayne Davis uses the system to monitor slump loss in the first round of trucks and make adjustments to get the concrete to the job in a more timely manner and with minimal water added on site. From a plant manager/batcher standpoint, the system is valuable because it delivers real-time feedback about the amount of water added on the current load in transit and helps them determine the changes that need to be made when batching the next load. Because they have the information needed to make adjustments to a load before there is an issue, as well as the ability to determine if returned materials can be used elsewhere, Wayne Davis has realized a significant reduction in lost loads.
