Worried That New Tech Will Hamper Your Driver Retention?

July 29, 2019 Karli Langner

The truck driver shortage is real in 2019, and growing worse. More and more drivers reach retirement age with the average age of a commercial truck driver equaling 55 years old. According to the American Trucking Associations, America will be short 175,000 drivers by 2026.

The truck driver shortage is exacerbated by our booming economy. Truck drivers are needed in every industry, including ours. Without improving the driver shortage, companies can be at risk of lowering their profitability.

There is a push today to lower the age limit for a commercial driver license so that younger drivers can be recruited. Lowering the regulated driving age would allow more young people to enter the industry and potentially eliminate the driver shortage. Younger drivers are more likely to use new technologies that companies are adopting to reduce mileage and capture location information.

Even if your drivers have been in the industry for years and are set in their ways, technology today from Command Alkon is easy-to-use and non-threatening. Once truck drivers adopt these new technologies, they realize how much easier the solutions make day-to-day activities.

What can you do to improve the adoption of new technology for truck drivers?

  • Help the drivers understand that using technology helps them to be better connected in both their professional and personal lives. Mobile devices can help foster a company-wide culture that respects drivers as professionals, and helps organizations move beyond an “us versus them” environment.
  • Using technology keeps trucks moving – so there is less idle and waiting time. With GPS-enacted trucks, dispatchers know where trucks are at all times and can alert drivers if there is an issue with a route, such as a traffic jam.
  • Technology helps truck drivers cut down on administrative time, helping them to get home faster.

Command Alkon TrackIt 3P helps contractors lower trucking costs by providing complete visibility to what is going on. It integrates with Command Alkon's BuildIt to enable comprehensive job cost tracking – immediately providing hauling costs that can be directly attributed to job cost codes/buckets for real-time job cost analysis.
