Reducing Embodied Carbon in the Built Environment with CarbonCure Concrete
With the world’s building stock expected to double by 2060, reducing emissions in the built environment has never been more important. Recognizing this, decision makers in the building industry have begun endorsing available technologies that reduce the emissions of building materials, or the embodied carbon of buildings. CarbonCure has manufactured a breakthrough technology that injects recycled waste carbon dioxide into fresh concrete, and once injected, the CO2 converts into a mineral, becoming permanently embedded within the concrete. At the same time, the added CO2 increases the concrete’s compressive strength, which enables producers to reduce the cement content of their mixes, reduce costs and further reduce their carbon footprint. The retrofit technology has been installed in nearly 150 concrete plants across North America and recently in Southeast Asia. CarbonCure has been validated on large developments including concrete paving on a highway interchange in Hawaii, a McDonald's flagship restaurant in Chicago, and the LinkedIn Campus headquarters in San Francisco to name a few. Notably, CarbonCure is anticipated for use in the Microsoft Campus redevelopment to support the project's embodied carbon reduction goals.
