NRMCA’s Annual Survey Paints a Brighter Picture than Previous Year

The 2017 Mixer Driver Recruitment and Retention Survey delivered by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) found improvements from the two previous years in various areas related to the driver shortage issue that has plagued the industry.  “In the survey’s three-year history, respondents overwhelmingly noted their biggest challenge was finding drivers with ready mix concrete experience.  Seventy-six percent of producers will only hire experienced drivers; that is, they do not hire new commercially licensed drivers or drivers under the age of 25.  Nevertheless, the industry managed to hire between 20,000-22,000 drivers each year between 2014 and 2016.”

Or particular interest is the survey’s charting of producer hiring challenges versus why driver’s left jobs, summarized in the illustration below.  Read the full article to gain additional perspectives on the survey and what the results say about the state of the driver shortage situation and it’s impact on the industry as a whole.

With the lack of experienced drivers available, and producer hesitancy to hire fledgling drivers, utilization of the drivers and trucks that are part of a producers fleet becomes a more and more critical aspect of operating a ready mix business with success.  Solutions like COMMANDoptimize and TrackIt allow ready mix producers to pump up utilization numbers of their existing assets by adding visibility, accountability, and improved decision making.  Find out more on our Ready Mix Solutions page.
