New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. Combats the Trust Gap Caused by Clouded Visibility

Where’s my truck? Where’s my shipment? Answering those questions can be a challenge, but does it have to be?

Over the last few years, the construction industry has been trying to move up the digital transformation maturity curve. There’s a lot of demand for having real-time visibility into truck and order location statuses. Expectations for visibility and transparency are changing now that we live in an “Amazon world.” You can order a product and have it delivered to your door within 2 days, all while receiving status updates of your product along the way. If you can enjoy this luxury in your personal life, why would you not expect it at work as well?

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc.

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. is a major construction materials supplier and a general contractor in the public and private sectors. The company was founded in 1924 and is headquartered in Bedford County in Southcentral PA.

The company has continued to grow over the years, primarily through strategic acquisitions of several other quarries in addition to blacktop and ready mix concrete plants throughout Pennsylvania. They offer aggregate, sand and gravel, hot mix asphalt, ready mixed concrete, Ag Lime, industrial minerals, soil and turf products and diamond tex.

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. currently has around 590 active carriers for their bulk, aggregate, and blacktop transportation; which include 20 hot mix asphalt plants, 39 aggregate plants, and 16 ready mix plants.

With 590 carriers, they run an average of 500 trucks per day across the state, which includes approximately 160 of their own aggregate and blacktop company trucks, 110 ready mix mixers, and an average of 300 hired haulers in a day.

Giving Up the Guessing Games

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. utilizes their own company-owned fleet, but when they aren’t able to cover their dispatch needs, they contract the work out to other haulers. Their internal fleet, as well as some of their hired haulers utilize TrackIt, Command Alkon’s fleet management system.

However, some of New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc’s haulers would operate without tracking devices at all. They would have to call the haulers and ask about their status and location. It was always a guessing game of when they were going to arrive, or if they were running late to the plant.

Enter TrackIt 3P

Once they discovered that TrackIt 3P was available to provide TrackIt functionality for third-party haulers to use on their own devices, New Enterprise began the push to ensure they had full visibility across the entire fleet each day, owned as well as hired fleet resources.  The initial push was to use the app to dispatch trucks and to capture their hauling time on a segment of the fleet, with a plan to have all of their hired haulers switched over to the app within the next 5 years. With 140 haulers already up to speed in a few short months, they are already well on their way to attaining their goals.

TrackIt 3P’s easy implementation can take much of the credit for that because it is truly so quick and simple. An email is sent to the drivers with TrackIt 3P login credentials. Drivers can then download the free TrackIt 3P app on the App Store or the Play Store. Once the app is downloaded, drivers enter the log in credentials from their email to login. Drivers then enter their carrier, shipper, and vehicle number – and that’s it!

“With 3P, we can capture a usage of 90% across our company of haulers using devices.  This was about a 41% increase across the company.  We now have nearly all our haulers online with a device that we can track and see.”

Jason Perry, Lead Fleet Scheduler at New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc.

Their process for paying their haulers used to include the paper slips that each hauler would turn in at the end of every shift, if they were lucky.  Some haulers would hang on to their paper slips for weeks at a time.  New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. wanted to improve on this and capture job costs the next day.

Before TrackIt3P, their pay process was usually 45 days behind. The system has completely revitalized the accuracy and speed of their billing process.  Now jobs usually get their costs by the next shift.

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. are also Apex comprehensive scale ticketing users. With TrackIt3P their dispatch office can now see the entire fleet at all times from the Apex tracking screen.

“Our dispatchers love that they can see all their trucks.  They don’t have to guess where they are at. It improves our customer service to allow us to see if a load will be late, or if there are problems.”

Jason Perry, Lead Fleet Scheduler at New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc.

No More Managing Trucks in the Dark

In this Amazon world, customers expect visibility into where their product is in real time. Paired with high delivery demand and a chronic driver shortage, the expectation for instant service puts pressure on the entire supply chain. That’s why TrackIt 3P is key to anyone managing hired fleet resources to ensure customer satisfaction, utmost safety, accurate billing, and protection of assets. After all, rich data and easy setup make for the most optimized third party fleet.
