Some lessons are learned over and over again. There are a number of lessons that we learn in Kindergarten that we carry into our adulthood. These lessons can also be foundational stepping stones to improve business in our industry. Isn't it crazy how something that we learn at the tender age of 5 or 6 still resonates in 2019?
- Share Everything.
- Play fair.
- Don’t Run with Scissors.
- Always Tell the Truth.
Share Everything. Sharing is caring. Sharing information found in organizational silos means everyone in the organization has access to the same data and can be on the same page to make more informed decisions. Command Alkon’s digital platform, CONNEX, connects contractors and project managers with their heavy building materials suppliers, producers, and haulers to share information across operations and supply chains. With CONNEX, you can share everything (all data and transaction information) from order entry to final delivery, helping you to uncover bottlenecks and areas of improvement in your operations while increasing efficiencies and productivity.
Play Fair. In our industry, if you don’t have visibility into your supply chain operations, you will not know what is happening. You could miss delivery time changes. Trucks may go to the wrong address because the driver lost his paperwork. Suppliers may send the wrong materials and you aren’t aware of it until the concrete is set and you realize it is wrong. You need visibility into the ecosystem you work with; CONNEX-enabled companies have real-time visibility into their operations, helping them to better collaborate, communicate, and play fair.
Don’t Run with Scissors. The reason you don’t run with scissors is because you could fall and injure yourself. It’s no secret that the construction jobsite can be a dangerous place for workers with trucks zipping around the yard carrying heavy loads. Technology can boost productivity on a jobsite, and can also promote safety. Connected safety applications, platforms, and programs are part of a new wave of digital, Internet of Things (IoT) products that are being designed to help organizations drive improvements across various elements of their safety programs.
Always Tell the Truth. In our industry, accuracy is key. You can improve accuracy by automating business processes to eliminate paper. By capturing delivery information electronically, you avoid the risk of creating errors from having to key information in. By automating business processes, receipts will be entered in real-time so that everyone has the right information they need to do their job. Working with a single version of the truth, miscommunication is a thing of the past.
As we transition into the next decade, companies should stick to these golden rules as the backbones to facilitate continuous improvement of processes and procedures and provide a direct advantage in an increasingly competitive industry.
We're excited to venture into a new year with our customers and are eager to see our thriving industry future unfold.
